According to CTO Erik Baan and owner Tjeerd Kramer, making the right choice in the world of car rental is a complicated endeavour.
EasyTerra wants to change that. Erik explains how: ‘We display the widest possible range: from very cheap to much more expensive.
In doing so, we try to make sure the best options get noticed.
That way, the chances of having unexpected costs, or being scammed, are minimal.’
The challenge: management constraints and high costs
A review of EasyTerra's current IT infrastructure revealed that there was a lot of room for improvement.
Tjeerd explains: ‘We were working with virtual private servers (VPSs) combined with managed hosting.
Besides this being very expensive, we also ran into limitations as well. We had to pay management fees,
but many things weren't possible and we had to do a lot of the work ourselves.'
Cloud vs VPS vs Dedicated servers
What is the alternative? 'Cloud is an option, but it comes with all sorts of unexpected costs.
Especially when you use as many resources as we do,' says Tjeerd.
For EasyTerra, two options remained: VPS solutions or dedicated servers. With shared hosting, such as VPS solutions, multiple users share the same server resources. With a dedicated server, the server resources are allocated exclusively to one organisation
and hosted in a data centre.
This means you can expect optimum performance and stability. One of EasyTerra's requirements was that they wanted to stay in the Netherlands, for the sake of
better network availability
and geographical location.
This led them to opt for a dedicated server.
Cost savings and easy contact
Due to their competitive pricing and hardware specifications, Worldstream emerged as a suitable candidate.
The deciding factor? Reliability. Erik explains, 'We wanted easy and quick contact, something Worldstream provided and which we lacked with
our previous provider.'

‘The offline backups had to be hosted somewhere. We had been using S3 for storage for a long time, so it made sense to keep using that.
Another aspect of our IT infrastructure is that we need a load balancer on the front end.
We ended up using Cloudflare for load balancing.'
